I have a 98.5 Contour SE V6 with a very noticable rattle coming from the rear of the car when I drive over a rough patch of road.It sounds exactly like something is loose in the trunk but nothing is loose. The car's performance is excellent, but this noise is becoming embarrasing and I worry that it could be something serious. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? If so, what caused it.

I have a similar problem on my 98 4cyl. I haven't had time to look into it to much yet though. Sounds like its something in my suyspension, but everything looks alright. I'll have to look at it some more. Anyone have a suggestion on where to start?

I have a relatively loud and consistent rattle coming from the rear driver-side of the cabin. I stopped worrying about it when I realized it was something in the seatbelt mechanism. I figured it would be too costly to address.

Bryan, thanks for post! I have the same problem and will sooner or later get it looked at! Please let us know. Ford will try to soak you for new springs/ shocks. But this has been only a temperary fix for some. A ford rep told me that they don't even have a fix, for whatever the problem is.

My mechanic was not able to road test my car but he did put it on a hoist. He noticed that the muffler made a rattling sound when he hit it with a rubber hammer. Also, he noticed the rear struts were getting soft but nothing serious.I used to have a Camry which needed its struts changed as often as its oil, but they never made a sound. Anyway, I am going for a road test this weekend and you can be sure it will not be with a Ford dealer mechanic.

Hey guys,
About 2 months ago I lifted my car up because of the same problem, but what I found was that my sway-bar links were shot. Just a suggestion, but for me the noise is gone.

After my mechanic test drove my car on the weekend, I have made an appointment to have the rear sway bar bushings replaced. It is not an expensive job. It is interesting that when he phoned the Ford dealer to see if they had the part, the dealer said they had lots of them!

How can you tell if the links are shot? As you can see, not all that experienced, but eager to learn.
Bryan,
What did the total come to?
