As far as TV's go. Toshiba and JVC tend to offer very good value, but in a tube Sony is the best. The Hi-scan (kv-32HS450, I think) falls around 1400? It's capable of progressive scan and taking hi-def signals provided you have the outboard decoder. It was Sony's XBR last year, their premier tube TV. We have 2 XBR's and one non XBR Sony. If price isn't a huge object they are definetly the best way to go.
For DVD, I would say Samsung or Toshiba are usually good deals. Sony's a bit better but more $$$ as usual.

I will agree with Pete in that JVC and Toshiba offer some of the best values on the market. If you don't go with a Sony Wega, I would probably stick with a JVC. They almost always come out on top for tube picture quality.
If you decide to save your pennies and get the HDTV, I'll let the other guys make the recommendations as I have done no research on the subject to speak of. At least not in terms of finding the best values.
As far as the HT sound system goes, it doesn't take much to exceed the commercial offerings made.
Couple of questions.
Needs? 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 surround? Most of the middle of the road receivers will have DTS, DD, and at least 5.1 surround sound. One of the best values on the market is still the Outlaw Audio 1050.1. It offers 6.1 surround and an unusually good amplifier (only 65w rms per channel but seems to do better than that). It also has a very simple to use layout.
Budget? How much would you be willing to spend on the 5 or 6 speakers and a subwoofer?
Room size? How big of a room is it going to go into?
SAF? How is the spouse appeal factor? Can you have large speakers, or do they need to remain small and inconspicuous.
BTW, CBM seems to be remaining nuetral in this forum. He is as welcome to be here as anyone else. If he starts making his typical riot enticing posts, he will be dealt with. Until then, I saw nothing wrong with him mentioning that his parents HDTV can be viewed from angles without effecting the picture.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Dave what do you think about the sony dreambox. 5 satellites a subwoofer and I reciever for 500 dollars? Not just about the price but what about the quality? I think right now I would probably go with petes choice with the sony hi scan.

It's a pretty good value. But, for the price, you could step up to the Energy Take 5 system. Would you consider DIY as an option?

Dustyn, do whatever Dave recommends you do. This guy can pull amazing plans out of his head. He is who I always ask first when I need info or an opinion regarding anything audio. Eventually when I am no longer extremely poor, I will be building my own HT, and he will be spending my money for me He hasn't given me any bad advice yet!

Check out www.onecall.com as they have 10% off all 16:9 widescreen TV's. The Panny 47WX42 can be shipped to your door for $1530. Significantly larger that the 36" tubes you are looking at, widescreen format, HDTV ready (1080i & 480p), and it will look outstanding.

I love diy projects! Nothing like being up to your elbows in sawdust. I know a little about electronics with my IT background. I can get MDF real cheap and things like that. I don't know if you would even recommend that. I will let you know when I am ready for that part of the project. The toshiba model is a good price but this is going in a kimball made cabinet. A 45inch tv would fit if it didn't have the speakers at the bottom. I think a 35 inch or smaller tv would be better for my application. The support on this forum is unreal. So honkey tonk if dave is mr.roboto does that mean his brain is an IBM.

AAron, have you seen that thing in person? It's not terrible but it certainly isn't as good as many tubes

When your ready to get the audio side of your home theater take your time and look around. Oh, and definatley take daves advice because he has some sort of database that magicaly finds the best deals on the net. I spent about a month putting together a system for a friend of mine "I bought it piece by piece" and he was extremely happy. His budget was 1000.00. I ended getting him an entry level yamaha reciever, polk audio fronts, klipsch center and rears, and a jbl sub. All that including tax, cables, and speaker wire came to about 900.00 and he was extremely happy. To be honest I was pretty happy too with the way it sounded. Good luck
