Hate to resurrect this thread once again but I wanted others to possibly get use of it. I finally broke down and took the car in and explained everything I did to "try" and show I was no dummy and it might very well be the Cat. He scared cheap-o me by saying it could also be the MAP sensor. Anyhow, upon letting him know of the 8yr/80k mile warranty on the Cats., (thanks for the info. didn't have the manual as I bought the car used so I couldn't verify it) which he had to verify cause he thought it was 3yr/36k miles, he took it in. Well, after a few days, he let me know the Cats were not clogged but were not working as intended. Ford will pick up the tab and I should have a new Cat. installed by today (1 wk later). Thanks for all the info. and hope this helps someone else out there.

My CEL came on in my '96 SE and the code also came up "PO420". The dealer is not sure what this is and wants to spend about 3 hours to check the O2 sensors. According to Ford however, the O2 sensors should NOT be replaced with a PO420 code.
I have 79,500 miles on my car. Does anyone know if the catalytic converters for a '96 are federally warranted for 7K or 8K. My drivers manual leaves me confused and the dealer thinks its only 5K.
Also, does anyone know if the pre-cats are covered under the extended federal emissions warranty?

I'm not sure a 1996 has OBDI or OBDII, very close to the introduction of the later. From what your describing it sounds like OBDII. If so, I would say that your catallytic system is warranted for not 5k, 7k, or 8k but 80k. You should still be covered and not have to pay a dime. You can do either of the following, hold your ground that the system is warranted for 80k and have the dealer call ford for verification or, you yourself call ford and get the confirmation number (if available). I wouldn't pay anything until you find out for sure that your liable. Good luck

Is that for the 4 cyl? I have a v6 and I seem to only have one per exhaust manifold. Is this right? I ask b/c I just got my cats replaced and noticed that there is a "downstream" plug where I thought a sensor would be. How many should there be? Thanks

It's for 96+ Contours. Your 95 has OBD-I and only has the "upstream" O2's.
