This has happened twice to my 00 SVT. The first time was around 5,000 miles and the second time was 14,000 miles. Fortunately, it was all covered under warranty. Is this a recurring problem with the Contour, or Ford in general?

Okay, it finally happened to me. And am I pissed. It's stuck in the middle. Won't open or close. But I'm still under warranty. Should I have the knucleheads at my local dealership fix it or should I do something myself, that Ford will not do, to keep this from happening.

Out of curiosity, does the moonroof assembly make a loud clicking when activating either directions of the sunroof switch... that's what happened to mine... I took the assembly apart (not as comlicated as it sounds) and saw that one of the plastic gears was bad... I'm going to try to replace that by going to a junkyard... that would save tons of bucks...

Sorry, I didn't read the earlier posts... this was already covered.. what it could be now, is mabe there's sum build-up or something obstructing the rails ore whatever the moonroof that it moves on... did you check if the new motors' gears got stripped like your old one?

When you are installing new motor assy., you have to make sure that it is synchronized. Manually close the roof (turn the main shaft with pliers etc, careful around the serrations on shaft). Hook up the motor to the power, but don't install on shaft yet. Press the switch and motor should run then stop automatically. The motor will run for alonger duration when retracting than it will when popping up theglass. Make sure the motor is in the stopped position for closed roof. Not sure if this is really clear, but hope it helps. If you've got the Ford Manual, see section on synchronizing moonroof motor.

Well, it closed this morning. I'm thinking it might have been humity? Although I've driven in a lot worse.
So I have an appointment with the dealership for Friday to have this looked at. Any suggestions on what I should menton could be the problem? Remember, It was stuck half open and wouldn't move.

The moonroof problem you and others have described sounds similar to the prob I'm now having with my '98 SVT. Two weeks ago, I noticed that, when closed, the rear of the MR came to rest about 1/4" below the roofline. Three days ago, when retracting the roof to its full-open position, it began to stop mid-way, as though it had traveled to the end of its path. The same thing happens when closing it. Also, when tryng to pop it up from closed to vent position, it goes nowhere. Instead, I get a ratcheting sound, and have to nudge it, to get it to raise into position. From what I've read on this BB, it sounds like the gear is on its way out. The motor was replaced under warranty about a year ago. The car is now out of warranty. Other than making myself a major pain in their butt, do you (or anyone else who reads this) know if I have any "offical" leverage that would compel Ford to replace the motor again?

I, too, have the moonroof popping problem in my 98 SVT. Luckily, it stuck closed, but will now only tilt or make a rather hideous popping if I try to open it. I would like any comments or direction on the procedure for getting to the motor and gears. Would it be best to break down and get the shop manual, or does Hayne's or Chilton's go into enough depth?
Thanks! Cason Grover
