Traded in my 1995 Contour GL,v-6, 5spd for a minor moded 1998 Silver SVT Contour at Heritage Ford less then a month ago. It has 80k and a PremiumCare ESP (good til 2003). What a totally different car! It handles like a go-kart and is alot quieter then the old car!
I have all the Ford service records that the previous owners (3 previous owners, including the ex-CEO of Ford of Canada) had done to the car. Unfortunately, I don't have the records for all the mods they'd done to the car. Here are some of the items the previous owner(s) had done to the car:
1) side markers 2) changed all the lights (interior/exterior) to blue neon bulbs. 2) cross-drilled rotors 3) Ractive Heat Shield Filter
Question is is it straight forward to replace/repair/clean the above items?
Also, there are several problems with the car. Keys can't be inserted or removed from the ignition switch. And first/reverse gear cannot be engaged. Does anyone here have any of the same problems?

The mods should be easy to repair or replace should you want to. The problem with your tranny is a common one and will not be cheap to repair (replace tranny). If you have the extended warranty I would get it fixed right away. Many people have had this problem and have had several trannies replaced. I think there is an associated problem with the clutch that contributes to this problem. Ask "Terry Haines" in the Transmission Forum for help.
BTW welcome aboard.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will be making an appointment with my dealer. I am surprise that there are frequent problems with the transmission since my '95 Contour didn't have any problem for the past four years I had owned it. The reason I had traded it in was it needed a new clutch after 140k km and it still can go into first/reverse with no problem. Maybe I should have swapped the two?!

The ignition switch problem is one that has plagued many a 1998 Contour. Apparently that was resolved by late 1998.5 or by the 1999 model year. There was no official recall, as far as I know, but I can tell you that when I had new keys cut for my SVT, the new keys were a lot easier to insert and remove from the iginition. First and second gear issues, may be reduced or resolved by changing the tranny fluid to either the "tranny cocktail" or using fully synthetic transmission fluid. I chose the latter, and went with fully synthetic. I noticed that you are in Mississauga. There are a bunch of SVT owners from Peel region, many of us in Brampton. Maybe we can get together and chat about cars and stuff.

I am always good for a meet.
Definately have the dealer look at the tranny. The last person I can remember that had the problem was from the Ottawa area, I can't remember his name. He had been through 4 trannies before they replaced the clutch as well and finally fixed the problem. It's better to be safe than sorry particularly when it's their money and not yours. I would aggree with Chris about the tranny fluid. I use the "cocktail" Synthetic + friction modifier.

Sorry for having a similar username as yours. I didn't realize it until it was too late.
As for the synthetic cocktail, that was the first thing I did when I experienced got the car. I did the same thing on my '95 Contour and it helped alot. But for this car, no difference. It seems that 1st gear can be selected with ease only when the car is still moving. If it is completely stopped, it will not engage. I've checked with my dealership, and it seems the clutch is not covered under the PremiumCare ESP. The ignition switch is covered. I'm scheduled to bring it in early next month.
On another note, I've noticed the tires on the car doesn't have a manufacturer's name on it but just the model name. Something called "HP-51". It is Z-rated and also is listed as M+S. Anyone knows who makes it and is this all-season?
As for a meet, sure.

Check new thread regarding a local area meet. Don't worry about the similar name. Those who know me use my real name most times.

Wow. Dejavu.
I just bought a lightly modded 1998 SVT Contour at Summit Ford with 72k and a PremiumCare ESP (good till 2006) and also have a 1996 SE 5ps. I also have a Ractive Heat Shield Filter.
Thank god I don't have any problems with my transmission, but my car is at the dealer right now for the lock cylinder issue. I have 3 keys, 2 of which are originals and are VERY difficult to insert and remove. You have to really jiggle them to get them in or out. Metal shavings were coming out of the lock. (Not good!) The 3rd key was cut after and is easier to get in and out but still sticks.
I've got a Focus right now as a loner but I sure want my SVT back. (Not to knock the Focus, it's a nice car but the Focus Wagon with auto and manual windows is a lot different then a SVT)

1996 Midnight Red SE MTX
295,000km and a little squeeky.

Wow is right!! Great mines think alike?! I just got my car back from my dealer. They replaced the lock cylinder and it is easier to insert the key. I'm also having problems with it sticking sometimes. As for a loner, I ended up with a 2002 Explorer XLT. Fully loaded, but the driver seat is not very supportive! Congratulations on your purchase!
