The ignition switch problem is one that has plagued many a 1998 Contour. Apparently that was resolved by late 1998.5 or by the 1999 model year. There was no official recall, as far as I know, but I can tell you that when I had new keys cut for my SVT, the new keys were a lot easier to insert and remove from the iginition.
First and second gear issues, may be reduced or resolved by changing the tranny fluid to either the "tranny cocktail" or using fully synthetic transmission fluid. I chose the latter, and went with fully synthetic.
I noticed that you are in Mississauga. There are a bunch of SVT owners from Peel region, many of us in Brampton. Maybe we can get together and chat about cars and stuff.
