When I bought my 96' Mystique 4cyl in December it ran between M-A-L, but this forum assured me it was okay. Last March, I was driving and it ran into the red, and did that every time I ran it for more than 15 minutes, the fan when on and off, but did very little. The thermostat, which Midas replaced, was fine, the gauge sensor, was messed up, and was replaced as well. When I got it back it ran in O-R which was fine. Now, two months later, it varies from O-R-M and sometimes A for no apparent reason.

I trust my thermostat is fine, I just think that Ford's gauge sensor is worth recalling (like on the V6).

All this is caused by bad quality control from ford on the temperature sensors. I've had 4 so far and each one has read differently, thats why ford dont put actual temperatures on the guage

Since fitting an accurate oil temperature guage I can verify that all 4 of my guages that collectively read O, M, A and L when the fan cuts in all result in the same engine oil temp

So dont worry unless it goes higher than normal.

PS so far I have found 3 temperature senders on the Zetec. 1 is above the thermostat, 2 is in the air intake and 3 is a small one down on the lower engine block. All are routed to the EEC unit so it is the computer thats decides the dashboard guage position

Hi Madmole...

You said there are 3 temperature sensor on the Zetec ?? I changed the one in the thermostat. How can I know each one is the wrong one ??? I really believe I have a bad sensor... my fan is kickin on very late... when the gauge hits the " L " . I don't like it doing that...

I have a 97 Mystique Zetec that runs between the O and R during highway speeds and immediately runs up to the L when sitting in traffic, then the fan cycles on and off repeatedly with the temperature alternating between the L and A. I have had the car to three different dealer garages and they all told me that this is NORMAL for these cars. I believe that this has been discussed at length many times on this forum.

I guess you are right Mysty....

If it is under NORMAL it is normal !!!

But still, I'll kept my defrost running on traffic !! :p smile

Thank you for the comment !!!!!!!!
