The second last time I pulled off the rear boots, I put rubber tips (surgical tubing)around the tips of the pliers, which in my case were long surgical clamps ( no longer being used in an operating room).Worked OK and the engine purred along but,after a few thousand km's the plug wires became bad, and were replaced..I must have damaged them slightly at removal and they must have degraded more over time .
If you experience sudden ignition problem in the not too distant future, it will most likely be the wires.
