Can gears be mixed between the MTX-75's? For example, Duratec 1-2-3 with Zetec 4-5 ?

The MTX-75 gearing is identical in both versions: Duratec or Zetec.
It is the differential (Final) gearing that is taller in the Zetec version. 3.84 vs 4.06

According to Barry Mumm, the Euro spec Mondeo has closer spec 1 through 5 coupled with a higher final drive. Many, many more options over the pond.

The lower the gearing, the quicker you can accelerate off of the line... but only to a point. If you're already having trouble getting power to the ground, a lower gear will only make this more difficult in first and second gear (especially 3L cars). That's why we chose to have Terry put in the taller Zetec final drive gears in both Rick's and Jesse's 3L SC'ed cars. Less TQ multiplication will help get the grunt to the pavement, instead of wasting it on fogging for bugs by smoking the tires.

Oval trackes play with final drive to help handling as well. A lower axle gear can loosen up the back end on turn exit. Don't forget when talking about race engines that top speed is not lower with a lower gear. The problem is whether or not the engine can handle the RPMs without blowing up. I know at Talladega and Daytona some NASCAR teams use a lower gear for more throtle response(top speed is aero limited). Of course some of those cars don't last the 500 miles.
