I had the exact same problem with my 95 Contour. New battery fixed it.

go get yourself a multimeter and set it test volts your battery should read 12volts if it does start the car with the car running you should be reading anywhere from 13to14 volts no more or less 4 example not 11 or say 15volts

Beforre you replace anything else, I had that problem. I replaced the alternator and the battery only to find out that there is a small 100v fuse in the wiring. It rests on the manifold, behind the engine. Check the fuse and see if it is bad. Any dealor should have it for under five bucks.
