You have the dealer-installed "System 1" remote keyless entry system. I seem to know a lot about it. For some reason the trunk-popping was an OPTION -- on both our cars! I've been trying to figure out how to get it to work, but I think it has to be specifically installed by the dealer. The stupid manual doesn't mention that it's only an option. Don't worry; it took me a while to figure out.
P.S. If you're looking to sell one of your remotes cheap someday I'd be interested. Ford sells them for $50 each
and one of mine is broken (works intermittently; the other one works fine).
EDIT: Send me a PM if you're interested in trying to figure this out together later this morning. I won't see the car again until next Saturday after this afternoon, and I'd actually like to see myself if it can be programmed in or in some other way installed onto the system, though I highly doubt it.
