Hey all,
I've done transmission filter changes before on a 96 Taurus and 98 Intrigue and it was a piece of cake. You just drop the pan, drain the fluid all over the place, pull out the filter, push in new filter, reinstall pan and gasket, and refill with Mercon AT fluid. So when I bought this C 2 months back with 59K on it, I just went to Ford dealer to by a trans filter figuring I could do it myself no problem. Well, last night after spending 5 hours screwing around taking out the battery support and trying to get this vertical pan off and then realizing there was no trans filter right behind it to be replaced I figured I'd come here for help. Can anyone tell me where this filter is and should I even mess around trying to replace it? If not, I'm probably stuck with this filter cause the dealer won't allow me to return it.
FYI - I ended up just doing the Haynes drain-fill-run-drain-refill and went to bed.

There is no filter, just a screen, that as far as I know, cant be replaced without taking the tranny apart
Hopefully Terry will be here soon to tell me Im right, or full of it but Im pretty sure Im right.

CRZYDRVR, YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ! The wickedly stupid CD4E DOESN'T have an ordinary filter like the rest of the automatic transmissions do. I wonder who's bright idea was this...

I've gone to yearly changes with synthetic fluid to keep it clean/fresh.

Thanks for the info. If there is no filter then what in the heck did I buy from the dealer?! I simply told them I needed a filter for a 98 Contour with the V6 and they sold me this filter for $28! They will see today about this.

There is a filter, it is accessable only by some amount of tranny disassembly. I bought and and returned a filter kit a few years ago that had a large plastic filter with some sort of felt-type element. i gave up on removing the side pan since it was too difficult. Look into the Magnefine, which splices into the cooling line.
