As far as I know, you can still run your car without an operational O2 sensor. As mentioned above, it will probably have bad gas mileage and some driveability problems, but it should still run.

As was mentioned above, I have never heard of having to replace O2 sensors in pairs. You might want to do it for preventative maintenance, but I don't see why you would
have to.
