Along with putting a hole in the end of the filter, I use some .015" aluminum flashing cut to roughly 7"X 8" and put it up tight against the block and behind the lip of the oil filter. Bend the flashing slightly to keep the oil running down the center of the flashing into the drain pan as you start to unscrew the filter. This does work but I usually still spill some oil on the exhaust. It eliminates alot of the mess, but I still end up using brake cleaner also. Ed
