Let the oil drain for 10 min. before doing the filter. Wrap old newpaper around the exhaust manifold and try to keep the filter tipped up as you pull it to minimize spilling on the block/exhuast/hands/eyeballs.
Toss out the newspaper and wipe up where you can.
