Usually the only reason to dismount tires for rotation is if you own a Corvette or Viper or something of the like, where the front and rear tires are different sizes. Of course, you can't do this if the tires are both directional AND asymetric (meaning they have a rotation direction and are left/right specific).
For those of us using directional tires, front to back and back to front is just fine.
