Here's the lowdown on the moonroof stuff:
There is a large plastic gear that is turned by a metal worm gear on the motor. This metal gear gets really hot in the sun, and causes the big plastic gear to melt in one spot. I made a "How-To" on fixing this problem here:

But that was a temporary fix for me. I am currently developing a brass replacement gear that would last a little longer than plastic
And no, you can't crank the moonroof manually unless you take the motor off.
