Here's the lowdown on the moonroof stuff:

There is a large plastic gear that is turned by a metal worm gear on the motor. This metal gear gets really hot in the sun, and causes the big plastic gear to melt in one spot. I made a "How-To" on fixing this problem here:
http://www.contour.org/FAQ/showfaq.pl?probs/stuckmoonroof

Check it out for pics of the inside of the motor.

But that was a temporary fix for me. I am currently developing a brass replacement gear that would last a little longer than plastic smile

And no, you can't crank the moonroof manually unless you take the motor off.

Great info, thanks. One question: You say "disassemble the moonroof until it is in this state" and you have the actuator assembly in your hand. Can you cover some ground on how to get there? I'm mechanically adept but this thing makes me nervous.

Sorry for the delay. As far as getting the motor out of the roof here are the steps:

-Pull the rubber ring on the inside of the roof away from the motor housing.
-Using a flathead screwdriver (or credit card) pop the light assembly out of the motor cover and unplug.
-Unscrew the two screws that where behind the light assembly.
-Slide the motor housing toward the rear of the car.
-You will so three screws holding the motor onto the roof. Remove screws and the motor will come down. Then you can remove the wire connections.

It's fairly simple but you need to know where the screws are located. Good luck!

Also, if you need to you can message me using the "Contact Me" link in my sig.

LOL! Aw hell man I got most of the way there but I got thrown by the "disassemble sunroof" part. Thanks for the info...s'gonna be a while because now we have what I think is a fragged water pump to deal with and if it did any damage to the engine the ****in' sunroof is going to be the least of my worries. Thanks for the response...
