FYI: R134a and freon are completely different. Freon is used on older cars. All newer cars use R134a. I'm not sure when the cutover was, but it seems to have been in the early 90s.

Also, you can't buy freon yourself, unless you have a special license, whereas you can buy R134a almost anywhere.
