The 98+ Contour MTX uses the same shifter as the Focus. So, any shifter for a Focus should fit a 98+ CDW27 (including Cougar).

I have one on my car, but you should save the $70 and just cut about 2 inches off the stock one. That is the only difference I could see.

The B+M Short Throw has a solid aluminum pivot point. The stock shifter does not. The short throw has a much more solid feel. *Do Not* cut the stock shifter! The throw angle is different on the B+M and it makes your throw shorter. If you cut the stock shifter you will increase your throw distance, and in effect lengthen your shift time. It will be a shorter shifter but not a short throw shifter. (function vs. fashion)

(It was a long weekend) Okay, I retract the longer statement and replace it with Uncomfortable and Awkward. The stock shifter has a different pivot point angle (that I am positive of)... The B+M is set up to be a more comfortable as well as shortend throw. Even if I am on crack, I think that you could see that the solid construction and aluminum pivot point are a worth while improvement. It is disgusting that Ford attempted to build a "Sports Sedan" worthy of an entry level Bimmer, yet left the sloppiest shifter and linkage that they could produce, in place. Cut down or not, it is still a crappy set up... IMHO. Oh, and thanks for calling me out Stazi! Now everyone is aware of my habits. (How the hell are you, BTW?)

Jason - I am pretty bloody good, lately despite some SERIOUS shiz going down in my life. I am overdosing on a 6ft blonde that rocks every part of my world, and I am loving it!
Oh and the SVT has never looked or driven better, and it can only get better ~ turbo/quaife/flywheel etc!
I know that the B&M feels nice, but I think it beacause it has a heavier shaft, thus making the shift effort easier - that's what it seems like to me, and I drove a B&M eqipped Tour last night, so it is fresh in my mind. I am going to experiment with adding weights to the highest point possible on my cut down shifter to see if it helps.
