Probably the fan reeistor. There was a recall on it, but I don't have the info.. Maybe someone else can post it...

Ford issued a recall for the heater blower switch or resistor in October 99, recall number 99M07. It was for certain 1995 thru 1998 model year Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique vehicles. However this recall has time frames that work must be accomplished: * On or before Sept 30, 2000 your vehicle is eligible for this program regardless of mileage. * After Sept 30, 2000 your vehicle is eligible for this program for 6 yrs from the original warranty start date or 72,000 miles whichever occurs first. Hope this helps.

I had this happen to me about a month after I bought it (in 2000) and the dealer fixed it. It happened again about 2 weeks ago and I'm just now getting to it. They did say it was a resistor of some sort. Where can I get one and how much are they? I know I can go to the dealer to ask them, but this is such a good search item.

Andenthal,
I don't have the PN for you, but I can give you how to. (Just ask the parts counter for a blower resistor and they will know exactly what you mean). Now for the how to:
I have heard that you can do this without removing the glovebox also. (It is so easy to pop out the glovebox,I just removed it to make it easier to work. The hardest part about removing the glovebox is emptying all the junk that manages to collect in there)
1. Remove glovebox (Open and squeeze in on the upper sides and pull down) 2. Locate resistor (white box mounting on the firewall, on side closest to radio. Will have wiring harness attached) 3. Remove wiring harness. 4. Remove one Torx screw and remove resistor. 5. Check wiring for damage. 6. Reverse procedure.
Be careful if you test the resistor before it is mounted because it gets really, really hot.
