I haven't got the rattling cat, but the flex pipe on our '96 went. After the mesh split off the front, the pipe itself got split as well. Nice loud ricey roar, and a major loss of power.
I got the replacement from Bill Jenkins and had a helluva time sawing off the rusted nuts. I'd recommend having someone else do it when the time comes
