I'm figuring this toluene and xylene can't be too good for emissions...
I guess if its reserved for track days, its not as bad ...

It's not only a matter of potentially being bad (if there's lead), but it's mostly useless! Unless you run something (boost/high comp/etc) at the track that requires additional detonation resistance from your fuel, then whatever you run on the street is fine. Octane boosters are a waste of cash if your engine doesn't require them. Again, short of changing the static compression ratio or running too high a boost level, there's not much that could require a Contour to run more than pump premium.

Increased ignition timing & Nitrous come to mind as big ones. Hot weather is another reason to need a little more octane.

Thanks Demon... I guess I was referring to the fact that mr. Speed Demons doesn't have any radical performance adders that would require higher octane.
I've never had my car ping, I guess it doesn't get driven much in very hot weather. '98 has less static compression, maybe that's a factor too.
Stinger00, I think the xylene/toluene is perfectly fine. I know of some local boost junkies who use it regularly.

we are stuck with 91 as our highest octane here now because the state is basically too cheap now to pay for the higher rated fuel
and im sure many will say there's no difference but i'd rather have the 92 than 91 octane personally
95 contour se...dark blue...monsterflow air filter...remanuf atx...wiring harness recall or bust!!!96k miles...motorcraft awsf32pp plugs & red ford racing 9mm wires...kvr black plated cross-drilled rotors & carbon fiber pads...currently undergoing renovation...excuse our dust!!! are my dodgers for real????

my car didn't ping last year with the 92. it is this year with the 91 though. one point make that much of a difference?
but the xylene worked wonders. not a ping at all.
thanks for the tips guys.

Blending 30% 100 with 70% 91 to bring it up to a reasonable octane level. It's 110 everyday here for the last two weeks and it seems to do the trick.
If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for?

So people know what they can expect on pump gas (in non-commie places that have 93/94 available). Now go 30% Xylene and 70% 91 (99.1 RON) and boost as far as you dare!
