I reserve the term "rice" for stuff that really is in bad taste. Opinions differ as to what we "like" or "don't like," but I hope when you say "bad taste" that people are a bit more unified.

I saw a lowered civic the other day with a high quality electric-blue-with-really-bright-yellow-stripes paint job, big air dam, big wing, et al. Not something I would drive around in, but A+ work on the visuals, because it all fit together. I don't even care what was under the hood.

On the other hand, a 4 cyl accord with factory green (boring) paint, with a silver stripe painted over it, and big yellow wheels... I smell someone trying to save a little money, cutting corners, and ending up with something that only a mother could love.

More examples:

Cat-back exhaust on an otherwise stock car--not rice.
4" tip on stock 1.5" exhaust--rice.

Performance suspension upgrades--not rice.
Cut springs with stock struts--rice.

Decals of products you actually use, and whose makers offer something in reward for your free advertising--definitely not rice.
Decals of products you actually use, and just want to brag about it--not my taste, but OK.
Decals because they are cheap down at the parts store, and anything to separate yourself from your parents is better than nothing--rice.

Rice means something different to everyone apparently. For instance, I don't consider clear tailights rice. There is a mod that many CEGers do that I think is somewhat ghetto but out of fear (yes I'll admit it), I won't mention which mod that is.

For the most part, I think blatantly excessive or poorly done mods are rice.

Roger sums it up pretty well. Although I do have to say that there are some things people will call ricey that I actually like. Things like blue lights (not wiper lites), graphics, etc... and I am not ashamed to put them on my car. For every bozo who chuckles when they pass me looking at my blue signals there are three or four more people who think they're neat.

Basically, who cares what rice is or isn't? You either like something or you don't, it's that simple. To me, having someone call my car "rice" is really upsetting considering all the time and effort I have put forth to make it look (and perform)like I want it to. Last week while I was out driving I had a guy in a Honda Accord V6 pull up next to me and tell me his car would smoke my "domestic" hands down. He proceeded to rev and chuckle, evidently to impress his bud in the passenger seat. I shook my head and smiled then turned back to the intersection. I heard him say "If his car was as fast as it looks he'd race me. That's an American ricer for ya." The light turned green and he took off down the road. That stuff pisses me off. Give people compliments on their cars. Flaming them and saying their car looks like it was on Fast and the Furious dosen't do anything but make you look like a jerk. Also, if the cars on the Fast and te Furious were so bad, why did they even bother releasing the movie? And even then, why did it do so well? The plot sucked and Vin Diesel was the best actor in the flick. It's because of the cars. Rice can be good, as long as you put lots of soy sauce on it (or butter and salt here in the US).

As far as the sidemarkers are concerned, don't make them glow at all times. To me this is totally RICE... I mean is it a car, or a semi-truck trailer?

Sidemarkers originally made their debut on European cars as additional turn signals. Thus, their function was to blink. Still that way today. Leave it to Ricers to make it glow at all times like my brother's position lights on this Truck... Whatever! [Insert here a puke symbol]

I think 'rice' is just another slang term that has wiggled its way into our vocabulary. Like 'peeps' 'yo' 'hella' etc. Example?

Peeps named Colter are hella rice, yo!

One would say badging up your car with a totally different car's emblems is in violation of the "rice" agreements. Personally, i get a chuckle seeing a 4 door EX Civic w/ SI & VTEC badges on it. Or worse, I remember going to Moroso to find an SE Contour w/ Skyline GT-R badges on it. Wow.
