The Dual Mode Damper, also referred to as a Harmonic Damper or Dual Mass Damper, does smooth out engine vibration during revving.
It's a "Dual" mode damper because it damps vibration on more than one frequency range. It takes the place of the big pulley on the crankshaft that drives all the accessories with the big serpentine belt. Ford only used it on late model Mondeos, and for some reason never brought them over for use on the American Contour and Mystique. But rest assured that it IS a Ford part. And, from what I learned, Terry Haines was one of, if not the, first to bring them over to the 'States.
But since it makes things easier on your crankshaft and its bearings, it seems like a worthwhile upgrade for those of us who treat their cars like show poodles.
Ask Terry if you need more information. Besides, I'm just a newbie.
