Well, I know my Pioneer HU(DEH-P7200) suggests you can hook up a pair of subwoofers INSTEAD of rear speakers for a blistering 70 watts per channel of MOSFET chip power...lol.
, but even then there are certain setting you have to choose on the HU to make it happen. If you are desperate, I say go ahead and hook the subwoofers up WITHOUT the rear speakers. It seems pointless to me, but if you are set on having some sort of bass, go for it(again, WITHOUT using the rear speakers).
