That beige box is not the shifter tower per se, but yes, it is part of it. Really that beige piece is a just a vanity/safety cover that sits over the shifter tower mechanism.
If you look beneath that beige box in the pic, you will see a gold-colored (plated) steel piece that is bolted to the aluminum tranny case...that is the shifter tower. So you were close
