John --

Check out Medford. Courtney and I were paying $1250/month including utilities for a 2+ bedroom, 1 bath, about 800 sq.ft.

we moved to a bigger place in Melrose for the same price. 2 bedroom with full kitchen, fire place, 1 bath, basement storage, parking, large front porch, about 1200 sq.ft. in a really nice neighborhood.

There are deals out there. The deals are NOT in Belmont or Cambridge. You'll be lucky to find a nice studio in Cambridge for less than $1000/month.

Check out Newton, Brookline, Watertown, Medford, Woburn, Stoneham, Waltham, Quincy, Malden, Melrose, or Winchester. Those areas are "once-removed" from Boston and you get a lot more for your money. Especially in the "Ms"

Good luck!

Also check out Arlington. It's relatively close to Rte 2. The commute is pretty easy too. Until you reach 95. That's usually a parking lot during rush hour. I'm currently commuting out Rte 2 (Boston to Acton), and it doesn't bother me at all.

If you're looking for nice places along the Red Line, take a look at Davis Square in Cambridge. Great area, although I think it's value has skyrocketed recently.

I lived there for 4 years while going to college and it was fun. My favorite bars are The Pour House, Cactus Club, and The Littlest Bar on Providence St. near the new Suffolk Law building.

Here's an idea, and I think that this might appeal to lots of NE-CEGers seeing that beer and golf are involved. Lets all get together for a Boston meet. Of course this by no means that we all need to bring our beloved tours on those streets, in fact I suggest bringing a beater if you got one or car pool. Anyway, lets do Beer Golf !! heheh. If you haven't heard of beer golf, its when a bunch of people go to either 9 or 18 different bars and have 1 different drink at each one throughout Boston. Maybe before we start a night of $hittyness we could all go to a famed north end restaraunt. Does this idea sound good? We of course would need a few designated drivers who will at least dink a little less .

My friends and I actually do this twice a year in Boston. Once in the Spring and once in the Fall. We get about 50 people (end up with 100 by end of night) together and start at the 4's by the Fleet Center and work our way down to the Hong Kong. We do 9 bars, 2 drinks at each bar, start at 1:00 PM and end at ?????... Lots of fun. I usually end up staying down there becuase driving is not an option at that point. I would be up for doing this some time with you guys (though on a smaller scale)!!!!!

Last time I added a couple of bars with some people and we ended up doing 13 bars. We did Boston Beerworks, The Tap, Cheers and the Salty Dog just for the heck of it. Oh Man!!!!!

Anyone know of any great deals (if there is such a thing).

The USAF is giving me about 1200 a month to pay for housing. Man I could be living high of the hog back in Texas on 1200.

Take care

John...are you sure you want to more closer to Boston? Have you considered going a little North and West...to the suburbs?

There are lots of apartments in Billerica...which is the next town over from Bedford. So you'd still be close to Hancsom.

A little more North (up rt. 3) is a town called Tyngsboro (sp?). More apartments there too.

The further you get from Boston (and the closer you get to the New Hampshire border) the cheaper the apartments get.

I know alot of "Lt's" here at Joint STARS/MC2A that actually commute from Nashua, NH.

I'd try Billerica 1st...not to mention it's got it's own strip joint!

Let me know if you need some help getting around...or with directions or whatever.

My extension on the Base is 3-5850.

**rant mode on**

Actually, Davis is Somerville, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!!! **the Somerville kid MUST represent!!**

Funny thing about Davis... it used to be a pit. Horrible value. Cambridge residents would speak about "having to go to Somerville," like it was the west side of hell. Then, suddenly, the Someday Cafe moved in, and brought with it the artsy community... the Somerville Theater reopened, the Burren shows up, then the Joshua Tree... and a couple of years ago, it was "the coolest place in the world," according to a couple of magazines. Now Cambridge wants it for their own!! NO!!! They didn't want it then, they can't have it now!

**rant mode off**

Anyway... Davis is nice, but, it's expensive. I do know someone who might be renting out an apartment in Somerville, right on the border of both Davis and Porter Squares. There's a ton of places, but, move quick, since the students are flooding back, and all the good places are getting snatched up. There's also a set of apartments next to where my g/f lives. 1, 2, and 3br apt's for lease. If you'd like, I can get their info for you!

Yeah I wouldn't mind the info. I've looked around and what I've found didn't impress me. I'm going to start looking to the west this weekend. Keep in mind I can't really spend more than 1200, but I will be signing a lease for 3 years.

If you don't mind, flow me the info at johnelfelt@yahoo.com

I apreciate the help
