Odd that you stated no CEL in your first post eh???
How much do you trust the mechanic?

mechanic's good, has done work for me before, and for many of us who work for the same company, including the owner, so this mechanic is very careful about getting things right. There actually was an old CEL in the computer that had been cleared, but no CEL came on when the problem made itself evident. The engine was really struggling, and it would take more than a minute to get to 60 mph.

Hmmm, you say the sensor was distorted. Was it distorted like it was melted? Pre-cats get very hot when the exhaust is plugged up. O2 sensors don't typically melt or distort from 'normal' exhaust heat.
