I'll try it this way (with fake numbers throw in for example):
Without the screen, the KKM is worth 5 hp. Still a performance upgrade, not a detriment. With the screen, it's worth 7 hp. More gooder.
The screen is there to help the MAF accurately take measurments of the airflow. More accurate = more power, when compared to less accurate.
