There is a closed-loop cable that travels in the shape of a backwards "D" (looking from the inside) behind the door panel. The cable is attached to the window at one point and lifts/lowers the window (via a motor). At the top of the backwards "D" there is a pulley that the cable slides over. It is possible that the cable has "jumped" this pulley and therefore is not on its "track" anymore.
But the only way to tell what has really happened is to take off the door panel and have a look. Not that hard to do, but takes a little time. There are about a half-dozen screws that hold the door on, and then there is layer of foam insulation that can be peeled back behind the door panel.
By the way, the window regulators are a known weak point on these cars. Many people have had to replace them (including myself).
The cost of the window regulator is about $125-130 (w/o labor).
