What do you mean by S&B? Is that a part, a brand, etc...?

And what do you mean by implode?

Any open filter (even the Powerstack S&B that comes with the KKM kit) should outperform a K&N conical drop in (if that is what you are talking about - the one that goes in the stock airbox on the SVT).

My KKM/Powerstack was imploding, but using me as the last word on that is apples to oranges. However, the more modded the Duratec, the more likely anyone will see this behavior.

Here's my personal experience:
K&N drop in: NOT GREAT *but no heatsoak*
KKM (non-SVT, so no hose): better but still not real good
Universal K&N conical: best of the bunch

Adding a heatshield will top it off. 40 days of 90 degF or more this summer (and 8 in a row right now) has really bummed my car out.

Agreed!

I'm having top end 1/4 mile time problems and I think it may be my KKM. A dyno test proved that there was a High RPM flow problem with the inverted conical filter on the KKM. SVT Pete have the one I want! I can't remember the name off the top of my head!

I like the survey, but it looks like the ShoShop CAI isn't doing so well. Is there any reason why? I think it is on sale at the Sho website, and I was going to make it my first mod purchase. I have a 2000 SVT. Are there any reasons why I shouldn't purchase the SHO CAI or why I should go with a KKM?

The Filter SVTPete is using is the AFE Full Velocity Stack Universal Filter he purchased through me. The advantage the AFE Filter has over it's competition is it's filtration capacity over a similar K&N, KKM unit. Rather than using the traditional 3layer cotton gauze, AFE uses 4 Layers and thanks to there optimized pleat geometery, this allows for a greater reduction in pressure drop, the change in air flow from outside the filter to the air that enters it. The filter is also designed with a velocity stack which is basically a rounded entry into the airstream rather than an abrupt wall like a KKM, K&N, ect., this feature alone helps to increase airflow as well as reduce turbulence in the airstream. The filter is constructed using engineering grade polyurathane for its ability to not warp, crack and distort over time from heat unlike the competitions Rubber construction. I have sold many units to our fellow CEG'ers and every person has only had positive results with'em. SWEET!! terry had recommended a material to make a heatshield if he was going to make one. i dont remember what it was.


stay away from the weaponr. their maf adapter is smaller by a hair, restricting airflow.

really though how much hp do you see. maybe 1-3, but i think even a 5hp gain is being very generous.

I saw a consistent 3-4 MPH increase in trap speeds just after installing the KKM I had. Similar weather, similar altitude, two weeks apart. I only gained about 0.1 seconds in ET.

The fact that I was running traps on a 75 degree day with the KKM that were only rivaled on a 45 degree night with the stock airbox at a better track and K&N drop in says there is a measurable gain with an open air filter, almost completely at top end/high RPMs.

Now imagine if you ran w/KKM on the 45deg. night. I personally know, and I'm sure many can agree, that heatsoak makes one hell of a difference. As an example I ran a 15.1 @92 w/Large Cone AFE Filter on probably one of the worst least maintained track surfaces in the country and as I was able to do 5 back-to-back runs I found my times kept on dropping with each run until it dropped to a miserable 15.8@88. That's a 7-tenths/4mph drop from my initial run, why, because of heatsoak. So how did I find this to be so? Well I was able to let the car sit for about 30min. than went right back out and nearly ran an identical run to the first one. So though an openfilter has some benefits there are definate cons to it, that being heatsoak. With a thick plastic Heatshield Box that seals to the hood via rubber weatherstripping, that should help eliminate if anything, inconsistant performance.
