You didn't mention 4 Cyl. or V6. I got a K&N Drop in from Carparts.com for my V6. They have the kits and the cleaning kits. If you want to stay stock on the airbox, then this is a good way to go.

I just did the "poor man's kkm" mod to my 99 v6 se. The car sounds incredible now. It's 90+ degrees out today too an there is a very noticable difference in performance. I highly recommend it and it is free!!!! You will probably want to get a K&N filter in once you complete it

Open up the air box, remove the air filter and push the top out of the way for now. Pull up on the bottom half of the air box to pop the mounting plugs free of the rubber sockets. (Pull hard!) Take some long tie wraps and secure the air filter panel to the top of the air box.
Another option: Keep the bottom half of the air box, but cut some 2" air holes in the bottom half of the box to provide more paths for air intake.

That is what I did to get the airbox out of the car, but instead of eliminating the bottom half of the airbox and ziptying the filter to the top half, I cut out the bottom and side of the bottom piece of the box to allow air in. IT still allows cold air to flow into the box from the fenderwell. Also, their is a piece in the bottom of the airbox that connects to the fenderwell. I pulled that piece out of the box all together. This is a really simple mod that will take all of 5 minutes if you have a dril and jigsaw. YOu can also just take a drill and put lots of 1/2 inch holes in the bottom piece of the airbox to allow more air in

That's exactly what I did, and it improved the 6K RPM+ pull significantly, not to mention the sound! Also have K&N purchased through Canadian Tire. Now I'm planning to run some piping from those holes to the spot where my foglight used to be on the driver side to get some real cold air. There should be enough room (right?).
