Bare in mind that I can't look at your car in person but from the sound of it what you have left isn't residue. The line you described sounds like paint fade. I'm assuming your car is one of the dark red colors they offered on 96's(another assumption). Most of the darker colors have shown
little resistence to paint fading over time. What you might try is to buy some paint cleaner(Mothers has a good one)and rub that in very good all around the border of where the badge used to be. I'm guessing the paint may be darker where the badge was than everywhere else so you need to use the cleaner all around that area and see if it helps. Paint cleaner should be followed by a good polish to see if it helped at all. HTH.
