How much does your job suck? Let's start with my previous job...

A long time ago, in a state far far away, I worked for a Fortune 50 (yes, fifty) corporation. I was put in charge of a critical project's security. They wanted to prevent their software from being reverse engineered, but they insisted on using Java. (Geeks will tell you this is very dumb.)

Now, this project was supposed to be the future of the company, but they decided that the legacy product they were trying to update took precedence. So I was in the unenviable position of having 2 full-time committments. 80 hour weeks really really blow! Now throw in two managers who both think my ass belonged to them individually, and you can probably see that I was dead meat.

Although it wasn't my idea, my fault, or even my work, I had the one (local) manager sending henchpeople out to covertly track my movements through the office building. All because he was pissed that I wasn't 100% on *his* little project. Um, what was I supposed to do - piss off the VP in charge of the other project? Catch 22.

So, the end result of this experiement in ruining a perfectly good career was that when upper management got caught short on profit margin for overpromising, the layoffs came down. Guess who got axed? That's right - moi! (and all the other people who had clue_factor > 0...)

Now I'm once again stranded in Iowa, but at least I'm in charge here...

Mathew, I just read over your website... I'm very impressed! I also got a kick out of reading your resume, I was at ISU the same time you were there until late '99! I worked in telecomunications out of black engineering building on the west side of the campus. Small world, heheheh. I loved the work, hated the low pay. I then went to Lighthouse Communications for a while as Telecom Facilities Manager, loved the pay and the work, but with the dotcom cutbacks, my growth related position was eliminated. Now, I'm here at McLeod as a Nortel DMS-500 switch tech. Love the work, hate the fact that McLeodUSA parent company has filed chapter 11... it doesn't effect me directly, but it sure worries the shiz out of me...

Thanks brad, unfortunately the website is severely out of date, i've been busy doing websites for paying clients ( ) and have neglected it a bit. ISU was a blast while i was there, i just hated the art department. The instructors and students were totally like the whacked out left wing bleeding heart fu fu artists you see on tv, that **** drives me nuts!

The students I came into contact with were totally oposite! Hangin at Cy's on the weekend after work, drinkin with the best of 'em. Hehehehe, I got to see full frontal nudity only 3 weeks after I started working on campus. Girl wanted free internet access in her dorm where I had been installing some for other students, so I told her how easy it was to do herself. She was so happy that I told her how to do it, she opened her bath robe!!!

My job doesn't suck, maybe when I finally get a job it will. And Iowa State rules, no experiences as good as Brad's but still school is good.
