I drive my Miata, Protege and CSVT everyday on the street. In 17years of autocrossing I have only had 1 mishap, a high pressure air conditioning hose ruptured on the hottest day of the year and I had a 1 1/2 hour drive home with no a/c.
The wear on street tires is small in my experience.
