Okay, I have run in to the oil pickup installation problem. I think PA's mechanic had this problem. I assume you just have to modify the bracket in order to install the tube???
I wish I could use the 3L pick up tube.
I also notice that the head gasket material hangs off of one side. Is this normal???

Yes and yes (IIRC). We (OK, he) just bent the bracket to make the pickup tube fit. It is centered and definitely not touching the pan, but certainly lower than before. At least I am not the owner of some freak motor. I was wondering how long until somebody else had the same problem. I wonder if a new 2.5 pickup tube would fit better? When was yours built? With 92K, it is probably as old as mine is.
I remember seeing my guy show me the head gasket on the block and then placed a SVT head on it. I seem to remember that the outside of the gasket overhung the heads. Prety sure this is because the 3L heads are a little bigger in that area, but Ihave never actually seen a set of 3L heads, so this is all a guess.

Jason, My SVT was built 11/97. That 3L tube sure fits nicely. I wish I could use it. I actually have the 3L heads going on this motor. The gasket material doesn't actually touch any portion of the block and simply overhangs it. I'm just hoping that I don't have the wrong year gasket or something. I need to pick up the pace on this rebuild. I suppose I'm in no rush since my Escort is still running strong but I'm starting to feel some withdrawl from not driving my SVT in so long

Are you using the 2.5 windage tray? You need to or you will have to modify the pick up tube mounting point... That's the only point that it mounts to other than the oil pump...

I was hoping that I wouldn't have to. Two of the studs that hold the tray to the 3L block were apparently bent during transport. I haven't looked at the installation process to see how the studs are installed to determine if it's safe to cut them off and replace 'em. I guess I need to do that.

The studs are main cap bolt and will be replaced if you're rebuilding it. Those bolts are torque to yield and should be replaced anyway. If you're the chance taking type, you can swap the ones over from the 2.5...

AHHHHHHH, it's a brand new block and already I have to tear in to it!!!! Maybe I will save it for last. How in the heck do you rotate the crank??? Of course I can't turn it by hand and I thought about putting the old pulley bolt on but figured it would be too hard to get back off (maybe not if I had an impact wrench) without rotating the crank counterclockwise. Any suggestions???

Just stick the 2.5L front pulley on it and turn it by hand. The keyway should be in the end of the crank in order for it to lock up though.
As far as the head gasket overhang, thats normal I think. Both the 3L and 2.5L have overhangs in certain areas.
