So all the 2.5L stuff is on the 3.0L block and I'm ready to crank it up. It appears the engine is backfiring through the throttle body which is typically timing. Checked the firing order in the Haynes for the 2.5L. Any suggestions?

Cam timing... Did you read the TSB's on the cam timing chains? Degreed in the cams?

Micah had a problem with timing as well initially, he had two plug wires flip flopped IIRC. I'd double check it with a true Ford manual too before tearing it down again to check the cams.

The haynes may be decent for typical maintenance, but...

Lets say it again....measure the EXACT cam timing with a DEGREE WHEEL and DIAL TEST GAGE as you STRIP IT DOWN, record the numbers and use the same timing when you check it on re-build.....PLEASE take note before you trash that expensive engine...

Terry - you obviously know WAY more than me and most anyone here - but can you really fault people (ie rolleyes) for using the procedures that the Ford shops would use?

Also, without adjustable cams aren't you very limited to how close you can get timing anyway, what +/- one link. I remember on my '77 T/A when I put in a new cam it was either way the f&#$ off or right where it should be.

Maybe I'm just overly sensitive to the whole rolling eyes icon thing - probably comes from having a black wife... "Oh no you did not just roll your eyes at me! I'll smack those eyes right out your head" (said with the ethnic head bob smile )

With respect...you are building a 'hybrid' motor here...spending hard cash on expensive parts and,in a lot of cases ,nothing on getting the 'know how' to build it correctly. The processes I have given are COMMON PRACTICE for engine builders. The shop manual will not give you the sort of info I or a pro engine builder will...you can take it any way you want... wink

So you are saying guys like me that have a limited budget and try to save a few bucks by doing it ourselves can expect no "real" help from the experts? This forum is considerably different than the F150online.com Lightning forum. Maybe I'm just spoiled.

If there are any "non-professional" engine builders like myself out there that have successfully done the conversion (98/00) and wouldn't mind sharing the correct firing order info, I would greatly appreciate it.
