I was just reading the TSB for the 98 engine and it says the cam arrow marking on the crank sproket is mismarked. Now if i am using the 2001 3L engine out of taurus does this apply. I am using the 3L heads and lower if that makes a difference.

I checked www.alldata.com and did not see any TSB for 2001 Taurus DOHC 3.0 re: cam timing mismatch. (TSB 98-25-14 does not show up.) I guess it shouldn't be a problem with your 3.0 heads.

He's wanting to use the SVT cams in the 3.0 so if the timing mark is wrong on the cam it will make it hard to time properly. Did you check to see if the car is in the BUILD DATE range for that TBS? I've got the Ford DVD for November coming so I can find out everything on it and the proper fix for you.
Jiako-Did you get the engine yet?

Oh crap - yeah, if you are using the SVT cams then you should heed the info on the TSB. Have fun counting links! I am not convinced that is a reliable method of cam timing. But nobody seems to be able to give accurate info for timing events for our cams (intake opens @, max lift occurs @, intake closes @, etc.). I think Troy was close but just had a typo. Still didn't include max lift occurrence data.

I haven't taken the valve cover off the heads of my dead 2.5L but my plan was to first check to see if the marks matched up with the chain and if they didn't, to mark the chain and cam gear so that when I reassemble it on the 3L, I just have to match everything back up to my marks. Does that seem like it would work??? I just don't see why you would have to use the TSB method if you can mark everything yourself and then put it back together that way.

What exactly does it mean to port and polish the heads??? Why do you do this??? Is this something I should plan on doing for the 2.5L heads to mate correctly to the 3.0L block??

from what i understand porting and polishing is basicly removing the ruff casting that is left inside the head and polishing to a mirror like finish to improve airflow.

Mirror finish does not improve airflow...
