search the problem forum to find out what exactly to look for to know for prety sure if it is you W/P I had to do some roadside troubleshooting over the phone with my parents recently when the waterpump on their 95 mystique with 150K had the W/P go on it while they where gone for the weekend and found soemthing about turning on the fan to some setting and see what kind of air it blows (sorry I cant be more helpful here but it is almost time for me to get off work and I dont have time to run a search right now if you have not found anything by late tonight when I get back on a computer I will try to find the post I looked at that day.

If my recent perusing of the many, *many* water pump complaints is any indication, for f*ck's sake, don't drive it til except to get it to the shop! All the many posts scared me so bad I went to Autozone this afternoon and ordered a new metal-impeller pump for $70, and though there's (currently) nothing wrong with mine, I'm gonna try and replace it next weekend or the one after. These engines apparently don't take overheating very well...good luck not killing yours. Let us know.

Hey Eric,
If you car is overheating and you have to use your car and you cant get the water pump fixed immediately, then keep your A/C on it will keep the engine cool for you.

if you think your pump is gone, it probably is, good luck getting her fixed. shouldnt cost more than 200 installed. try ffx muffler and brake in ffx. they do really good work and very affordable. good luck with your pump

Yea man, I feel your pain. Mine went at 60K, and
please don't drive it till you get it fixed, a pump and thermostat (yes you will need to replace it at the same time) is a lot cheaper than a new engine. Good luck.

If your car is overheating DO NOT run the AC!!! If it's on turn it off immediately... it loads the motor further and will do nothing to cool the engine!! Open the windows and run the HEATER full blast.

The heater uses the engine to heat the air, so turning the heater on gets (realatively) cool outside air flowing "through" the engine and helps dissipate some of the heat. AC makes the engine drive the AC compressor in addition to everything else and it does nothing to cool the engine, just the cabin. It will compund your problems if it's on.

However, if the water pump has truly bit it, you're better off stopping and getting a tow because you have NO coolant circulating at all. What Kris said about our engines not taking overheating well is right.

No offense smooth, just wanted to be sure to straighten that out.

NO prob bigwalton, I see what you are saying cause I was kinda saying what i didnt wanna say to, and i see where i am wrong......

the A/C will force your fan to run high, meaning it will keep the engine bay cooler, making the engine run cooler, however, it does put a load on the engine as you said above.

I was not really thinking about the problem when I said some advice!! my fault!! I saw the overheating, and forgot all about the water pump goin, so that is my fault for not being as detailed as i usually am!! sorry for the mistake, but yes bigwalton is correct if you can stand using the heater then use it, but do drive conservatively and rarely!! if you cant, do not drive her at all!!! take her to get fixed asap, or else you will be purchasing yourself a new engine

HOWEVER, if it does go, what a good opportunity to get yourself a SVT engine!!! laugh wink
