Well, I decided to run my car today with a stock Contour SVT airbox and paper filter. The car has always felt faster with the SVT airbox than it has with any other intake, but I always refused to believe that it made more power, since so many of you SVT guys have KKM's.

2 weeks ago with the 9-inch K&N filter:

16.10 @ 86.93
16.13 @ 86.38

Tonight with the stock SVT airbox and paper filter (it was actually hotter tonight as well).

16.02 @ 86.73
16.01 @ 86.69
16.04 @ 86.54

I'm going to compare the two on the dyno on Saturday. Something tells me the open K&N will still put down slightly more power with the hood open, but definitely NOT on the street or the track, where it counts.

The car is a V6 ATX Cougar with a lot of exhaust work and no secondaries. Full interior.

Psst...

HEATSHIELD!!! laugh

Heatshield, cold air draw, better underhood venting. All major factors in better performance "off" the dyno.

what were your 60' times...

i ask because, as a general rule, most of the power would be seen a higher RPM with a better intake setup. your MPH doesnt indicate a top end change. actually, your best MPH was without the SVT airbox.

With the K&N:

2.51
2.49

With the SVT airbox:

2.41
2.44
2.46

I launched the same way each time, since it's an automatic. Stood on the brake, stood on the gas, let go of the brake. My theory is that idling in the staging lanes fills the engine bay with hot air, causing the car to struggle more coming off the line with the open K&N.

This might be really cheesy but I heard once that running the AC will generate the radiator fan to kick in and keep running just before the the run, and it supposedly would help. I guess a manual override switch would do the same thing. I agree with Demon a heat shield would do your 9" K&N miracles.

I had similar concerns so I dynoed hood down. I have a custom full airbox and 9" K&N. The K&N, airbox, and 75mm MAF made 12 HP more than stock SVT parts (again hood down) though I did not acess the indivdual contributions (hard to do as MAF meter was calibrated specifically to the K&N.)

But without an airbox I agree, stock probably better on a hot day..I have underhood temp recordings to back this up and I actually had reverted to stock airbox from KKM in the summer due to heatsoak. airbox eliminated heatsoak.

Shaun,
Sorry no pics. Plan to take some pics but I have some new rubber trim for the top of the airbox/hood seal that I wanted to install, FMS wires, then clean things up..excuses, excuses

i think you would be amazed at what a better launch could do for you. the 60' times are not too good. have you tried stalling it lower than the limiter? it seems like youre breaking loose in 1st gear.

notice the 2.51 60' time compared to the SVT 2.41 time... all the difference was in the launch...
