I think a Quaife LSD is the answer. Terry's intro to the weakness of the stock gears at Spring Zing was kinda scary! Had me doing alot of thinking at the autox the next day! confused Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think it's the tranny itself but the diff that makes it weak. $595 for the Quaife but cheaper than cooking the whole works!

Quaife has straight cut gears for $4450 US, and I thought they had upgraded helical gears for about $2000, but I don't see it on the Quaife North America site.

Actually its the gears- yes the diffs are weak but the actual gears are also designed to meet the production spec of power and torque outputs. Kinetics Racing (who build Duratecs for the ex Speedvision Touring cup) say that their drivers on worked 2.5 motors with about 300 hp N/A would gun the car on the straights and peel the teeth off the gears in any gear they where in-

so you would need a new stronger diff and custom gears- IE $$$$$$$$$$$$

Maybe I was too drunk @ SZ but I could have sworn that Terry mentioned the diffs, syncro's, and other things I can't remember were what was weak. And then something about how the gears never break. confused

Anyway, yeah the tranny is just no good for drag racing abuse. You will eventually break something. Atleast get a quaife...

Funny how no S/C Duratec's have stripped the gears off. They make well over 300HP (325-360 range)

Maybe you are thinking SPIDER gears??? As in Differential. Like mentioned earlier.

No, it is the gears too. Go over to the forums at fastcougar.com and talk to Leo Capaldi who is currently driving a Cougar in the Speedvision World Challenge. He has stripped the teeth right off the gears. Granted he probably puts more wear on his transmission in one race than many people on the street put on theirs in an entire year. (Porsche uses a generalization that 1 mile of racing is equivalent to 1000 miles of driving on the street.) But with turbo/supercharged 3L SVT's coming soon probably putting out a fair amount more than the 300hp Leo puts out, I think we'll start to see some new types of failures in transmissions.

For extreme power straight cut gears are the way to go.Helical gears main attraction is they are quiet. In a weakness scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the weakest link in the MTX it goes like this:- Diff = 10 (get a Quaife)Sycros= 8 (use 2000 parts with pressure lube aka 'Bulldog Box') All bearings, lube = 6 (Bulldog has pressure fed bearings) Trans shifter tower weak/stuck in gear/broken shift bolt =8 (use 2000+ tower with 2000+ selector forks) Gear case flex=5 (upgrade and strenghten gear case, can be had in 'special' cases' from HMS Inc) Final drive gears =3 (extreme boxes can have Quaife final drive sets fitted) .
It always depends on use Vs budget.Buckshot had a good motor at Gingerman Raceway during Spring Zing, with the Bulldog Box...so what 'let go'...the drive shafts tore up the hubs! wink Whatever you need we can build but don't bark at cost, transmission parts are very expensive, again 'If you want to play you have to pay....thats the way it is!

Terry,
I was interested in pricing and what comes in the turbo kit you offer for the Zetec. I have a friend who is very serious about puting a turbo on his 2000 Ford Escort ZX2 S/R. He has been saving the money and is now looking for a turbo. Just let me know what you offer. I tried to PM this message to you but your PM Box is full.
Thanks,
Charlie

Terry -
If I were to do MTX work, I'd wanna go all out. Is it possible to keep 1-4 at the same ratio but make 5th taller to drop RPM's about 20% ?
