You're absolutely right. In the JTCC series, the infamous "Castrol Supra" is running a 4 cylinder engine. TRD found that they could extract enough power from the 4 banger that it didn't warrant the weight and other penalties that the 6 pot would bring. Indeed, it's a variation of the Mk2 MR2 turbocharged engine. I am sure there are people who have successfully copied that setup.
