Hey, maybe someone with a disassembled motor would be willing to set the crank in the cradle and set that on the oil pan and let us know how much oil it takes to just miss the crank. laugh

Wish I had read this thread a couple of months ago ... sigh. Everything I have read and heard indicates that this is why my engine went to lunch. Please see my own thread at

Thanks for the heads up Horse. I'm going to add a half of quart and then mark the dipstick so I know where "FULL" really is. I agree with TH, don't get this guy in trouble at his work, if someone does then we'll never get anymore "inside info" ever again

Oil Starvation -----

Accusump! wink Bob Mumm (Mumm brothers Speed vision Touring Coug (Close by my house)) Uses an accusump. He had a few tests done that came up with the same information. Major oil starvation.

http://www.accusump.com/acc_products/1qt.html

Here is the one he recommended for a stock duratec. He uses the 3qt. I believe. laugh laugh laugh

I dont think this stuff can be a problem unless people are running poor oil or neglecting oil changes. I'm running synthetic and run it all the time. Even if oil dissaears for a short time, I think the better lubrication ability of synthetic oil will cover our asses.

The only problem is what happens on a top end blast? That can be a problem.

is it possible to put a 'weaker' oil pump that cant push so much oil up in the motor so quickly?

Guys, the oil starvation problem is not really due to the pan not having enough oil, I think it lies more in the crappy design. With Performance Fords developing a windage tray, or Mirko's custom pan, I think we'll be fine.

Ask 'Shaggy' in NJ.I fitted his Accusump (2 Qt),with remote oil filter(Ford V6 size ,NOT an alternative!),relocated oil cooler/heater with the filter unit etc etc...Its a tight package, best to have the battery in the trunk...I think he is posting some pics soon.... wink

From what I gathered all the cougar motors I saw blow where due to oil pump failure. Unfourtunatly I dont have data to back this up since I did not deal first hand with these issues. But Ill see what I can find.

Pump failures hey...

Isn't this a new failure mode? I mean I have heard oil starvation, oil foaming (almost the same...) and crank bearing failures due to uninhibited harmonics, but I've nver hear of oil pump failures...

Are we going to have to buy premptive engines like we do waterpumps?

This is really scary...
