I change my mobil 1 every 6000miles, sometimes 8000. I was worried with all the lube shop owners saying it would harm my engine (what did you expect, no really...)
So i did an oil analysis, and at 9000 miles, my oil (amsoil 5w30) was still in spec. Pure one filter. Foam air filter (that accopunts for alot, filtration is better than K&N or stock)
So if you're gonna dump at 3000, I would say mix 50/50 with conventionnal oil. If not, just go 5 to 6K with syn. Comes out the same price wise, and its much less hassle. Cleaner engine too.
BTW, leaks on high mileage engines are caused by accumulated crud from the dino oil. Crud shields seals from the oil, seals dry and shrink. then when you add synthetic oil, it cleans the crud, and exposes the seal. If the seal has dried out too long, it cannot recover its original shape or size. Then you have leaks... And if you have a seeping leak, it will be worse with the same grade syn, because of lower viscosity...
