HAHA! "Mechanics"! I remember my friend took his car into a shop and asked them if they carry any lowering springs, and the so called "mechanic" told him there's no such thing and he should just cut his springs! I'll tell you what a real "mechanic" will say about synthetic oil, he'll say it doesn't exist! But I was just relating what I have been told.

All of the advantages (of which there are many that are real) of synth are lost when it is mixed with dino. This includes pre-packaged blends and homegrown mixes. Off-the-shelf additives are to be avoided for the most part. I used to be a Slick 50 believer, but I have been enlightened. There's a lot of misinformation, myth, and just plain lies flying around out there, especially from the automotive service and dino oil industry. They want to keep you stupid, and preach the mantra of dino and 3,000 mile change intervals. Be an informed consumer. Check out http://www.autoeducation.com/autoshop101/oil-change.htm and practice your reading comprehension skills. I switched to Mobil 1 Synth at 50k, I use a foam open-element air filter from ITG, and ditched Fram for Motorcraft in the oil filter department.

Putting all syn oil doesn't do anymore for your engine than just 1 qt in with your normal oil. Or just add a bottle of duralube or slick 50 in with your normal oil, because all syn oil is is just normal oil with a treatment in it, like duralube or slick 50. Just my 7 cents Interesting to say the least

To those that use synthetic, how often do you change your oil? I use Mobil 1 and do it every 3500 mi.

With the synth, I feel good about following the owner's manual--5000 miles.

Not that I don't believe you, but I never saw that before and I am going to go out and read the manual to look for it. Of course, you do know that Ford now recommends 5W-20 for our engines and the Motorcraft 5W-20 is a semi-synthetic? I'll just stick with Mobil 1 5W-30 and K&N Oil Filters, thank you very much.

I change the oil in the SVT roughly every 4 months (3-4k miles) The (ex) cavalier (98 2.4L DOHC) got changed every 3 months (6k miles) Both showed about the same results on oil analysis. Which of course means the SVT is far more abusive on the oil which is to be expected. The Z24 (2.4l DOHC) will be getting the same 3mos/6k changes as well and it will be getting it's first taste of Mobil 1 this month (has ~5000 miles on it currently - changed at 500 & 3000 with Mobil Dino)

That's not how it's worded silly... "Their are no synthetic fluids or break-in fluids in your SVT Contour when it leaves the factory. Note that SVT does not make recommendations about the use of synthetic oils in your vehicle. Should you decide to use synthetic engine oil, we recommend you allow 4000 to 6000 miles (6500km to 9600km) in order to assure complete break-in before switching to synthetic oil." In other words they are not telling to run it or not to run it. Just when to start using it if you decide to do such... See if they recommended you to use synthetic and you did not. Then they (the dealership really) could use that against you if you had engine problems or failure while using regular dino. So they took the easy/safe way out and recommended neither oil. Just oil viscosity. Thus leaving the choice of oil to the owner. Since Synthetic oil is so vastly superior to dino oil it's really not a hard decision to make IMO... Price wise it's just a little more expensive over a years worth of changes. On a multiple thousand dollar car that's a no-brainer in my book... However I never have nor will understand trying to save a few pennies on vehicle maintence versus getting quality parts either. (see that all the time)
