Just a thought concerning the oil starvation problem related to the installation of a S/C. When most people check their oil, they do it with the engine turned off. With the engine turned off, wouldn't most of the oil accumulated in the S/C and it's related lines drain back into the oil pan? So when one sets the oil level in the normal manner - according to the mark on the dipstick, wouldn't it be significantly lower when the engine is started and the S/C and lines get filled? This would certainly make an oil starvation problem worst. To prevent this, I would guesstimate what the oil capacity of these lines and S/C are, then overfill by that amount.
Just a thought.

It didn't make the knock until I tried restarting her on the side of the road...

So what RPM's were you running just before she blew?
