I wasn't working from a Ford shop manual. Perhaps it would have explained this a little better. Unfortunately, I was using a Haynes maunual. These manuals use to be pretty good, but the one for the 95-98 Contour is full of inaccuracies and is very vague at times. The big hole in the mount still doesn't make as much sense as a hole that fits the bolt. It just seems to me that closer tolerances could have "positioned" the motor better than the one that's on it. Anyway, thanks for the info.
