I am installing a HD SVT motor mount (front)with urethane inserts on my 95 SE. I noticed that both units have a bolt O.D. that is much smaller than the mount I.D. It seems that an engine should be solidly fastened to the frame through the motor mount. It is advertised that the H.D. mount reduces torque steer, but I don't see how with that kind of slop. Does anyone know why this mount is designed like this? Provide design details if possible as I do not understand why the mount is designed the way it is. Perhaps the mount is clamped by the force of the bolt . . . I don't know!

Did you look into whether there are other differences between your 95 Mounts and the SVT Mounts ??

Since you know that they use different BOLT SIZES, then the Mounting Brakets may also have different size holes in them, and be different thicknesses.

The SVT vs. SE mounts are the same dimensionally, but it is a heavier mount via the torque limiting rubber in the mount. The hole thru the mount is dimensionally the same as well. The SVT mount fits just fine, but my question is more about the design of the mount than the new mount fitting. I'm not sure if mount is really accurate. Looking at the car the "mount" seems to be more a torque limiter. I still am perplexed about the design though, with the horizontal bolt O.D. being so much smaller (-3x)than the mount I.D. It's such a temptation to bush the mount to fit the bolt, but I'm not sure if that would cause any negative effects. Being an engineer, I know things are designed a cetain way for a reason, but I don't see the reasoning behind this design. If I can't find a satisfactory answer, I'll just install the SVT mount/urethane insert and be happy!

The through bolt hole in the front/rear mounts is larger than the bolt so the engine can be set at the correct position. When tight, the bracket is held to the central 'core' of the mount.Check the ford shop manual re the setting gage used for this & yes they were designed that way for a reason......... wink

I wasn't working from a Ford shop manual. Perhaps it would have explained this a little better. Unfortunately, I was using a Haynes maunual. These manuals use to be pretty good, but the one for the 95-98 Contour is full of inaccuracies and is very vague at times. The big hole in the mount still doesn't make as much sense as a hole that fits the bolt. It just seems to me that closer tolerances could have "positioned" the motor better than the one that's on it. Anyway, thanks for the info.
