...and I would agree to that...but take a look at the professionals, they blow engines all the time, and the cars are designed for that.

Your nuts if you are a weekend racer, and don't think anythings going to happen.

I'm with Joey...

Race cars, even the mildest applications, are designed to be RACED!!! Yet, they break left and right! All the time! Every day! At every race!

It seems only reasonable to expect our humble cars to break with MUCH less abuse than a race car...

I been think about this problem a lot. If lets say 100 V6 contour's have blown their engines that is still a very small number compaired to total number produced. I think there are something like 4,000 SVT contours and if 100 blow their motors that's only 2.5% which would be an "acceptable" number.
These are just ramblings so please get in my face about the numbers, I just guessing production numbers.

The comment about weekend racing was like a light coming on in my head. I just never really gave it much thought but guess what guys, when your at the track watching a car go around or watching it on TV you did not see all hours spent fixing blown rods, ground up bearings and blown gaskets. But like I said before..there are just ramblings so don't go crazy on me...k?

When I was a young man I had a 84 VW GTI. Raced at every light around every turn and blew the motor at 70K

there are a LOT of V6 cars - over 11,000 SVT and hundreds of thousands of 170HP V-6's

we see the most verbal ones....

BB, Wesley, Mike, Wrecka , Michael ..et al: how many of you had your engine let go during or subsequent to a long right hand turn?
Were you pushing hard or did the motor just let go? jj

Sorry I'm joining the thread late. FWIW...

...Similarly, what proportion of folks you see being pulled out of ditches in the winter are driving SUV's?

I suspect the correlation isn't between synthetic motor oil and blown engines... It's that drivers who hit the rev limiter with some frequency put Mobil 1 in, thinking it will protect the motor from the abuse. It may prolong the motor's life to some extent, but sooner or later you gotta pay the piper...

I've used Mobil 1 5W/30 from the 2nd oil change onward. I'm still flushing out the sludge from just 6000 miles of dino oil! All my manual says is to use oil with a certain API seal on it, and Mobil 1 5W/30 does.

That's true enough for the engine failures, but the diff failures mentioned above can be directly attributed to 1/4 mile runs. Unless the car hooks up perfectly, there is a fair risk of causing impact damage to the diff, especially if any wheelhop occurs. I've seen 1st hand (from testing we do) what impacting can cause - the diff may not necessarily granade on the spot, but hang on enough so that it fails later on, when you least expect it... The impact can cause cracks at bottom of the gear teeth, but may not fully break them off. Normal driving will then fatigue the weakened teeth until they eventually fail. Anyway, that's enough OT rambling...

I had the good fortune to be able to talk with the guy's at Bondruant, and they where adamant about synthetics. They also suggested an oil accumulator, a (larger) oil cooler, as well as a larger oil pan and windage tray, which allows them to use more oil, they run seven quarts! I also scamed a ride... what a blast! I run 5w50 castrol synthetic in both my 'Tours, no problems in 35,000 mi.
